The market for mobile applications is dominated by PEM fuel cells. As they are low-temperature cells they are able to supply electricity immediately on start-up. This is essential for many applications, e.g. in automobile technology. Power requirements for mobile applications vary greatly. For example, to supply a small boat with on-board power a fuel cell system with an output in the low kilowatt range is sufficient. On the other hand, to equip submarines with adequate power for propulsion, on-board electricity and emergency power supplies, systems with outputs in the megawatt range are required. Due to their modular construction fuel cell stacks can be adapted to an extremely wide range of applications.
