These applications can range from in-house power and heat generation ( output starting at 2 kW ) to heat and power-supply for entire residential areas by means of heat-and-power block units ( with outputs in the MW range ).
Conventional block-type thermal power stations use combustion engines and gas turbines to generate both electricity and heat. A new generation of power plants could instead be operated with/powered by fuel cells. Advantages of this technology include high efficiency as well as drastic reduction in emissions and sound pollution.
